British television presenter and former Monty Python star Sir Michael Palin has launched a new three-part documentary series exploring intense political divides, severe urban poverty, and escalating maritime tensions across the Philippines. Produced by ITN Productions for Channel 5, Michael Palin in the Philippines follows the 83-year-old broadcaster as he navigates the complex history and modern struggles of the Southeast Asian archipelago.
The journey begins in the capital of Manila during demonstrations marking 40 years since the removal of dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Palin gains diplomatic access to Malacañang Palace for a sit-down meeting with the current head of state, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., whose family legacy remains a focal point of intense public debate and historical reckoning.
Navigating Political Unrest and Historical Legacies
The series dives straight into the nation’s turbulent political landscape. Alongside the current administration of Bongbong Marcos-whose parents, Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, ruled for 21 years until their 1986 exile amid allegations of a $10 billion state theft-the documentary touches upon the country’s recent past. This includes the legal troubles of former president Rodrigo Duterte, who faced international scrutiny regarding the deaths tied to his administration’s war on drugs.
“I find these journeys for 5 irresistible and revealing,” Palin remarked regarding the project. “Rarely does anyone have the chance to get as close to the great issues of a country as we did in the Philippines. I was a little nervous of taking on yet another journey, especially one so testing on the energy levels, but what we heard and saw was extraordinary and very different from any of the journeys we’ve done so far.”
Geopolitics in the South China Sea
Beyond urban protests, the documentary ventures into high-stakes geopolitics. Palin flies out to the militarized island of Pagasa, situated in the contested South China Sea. As China aggressively asserts territorial claims over critical global shipping lanes, the crew finds themselves directly in the middle of a tense maritime standoff between Philippine and Chinese coast guard vessels.
Series producer and director Neil Ferguson described the project as the most ambitious shoot ever undertaken with Palin. “It’s a country of stunning contrasts and we often experienced paradise one day, followed by something much darker the next,” Ferguson noted. “Whether it was political protest marches, military flights to remote islands, sleeping on the deck of overnight ferries or swimming with thousands of sardines, Michael took it all in his ridiculously nimble stride.”
Contrasts of Paradise and Hardship
The three-part series captures the dual nature of the nation’s 7,641 islands. Episodes showcase breathtaking natural wonders, including remote beach camps in El Nido, underground rivers, and marine life encounters in Moalboal. However, these scenes of natural beauty exist side by side with severe economic hardships.
The production also travels to volatile regions, such as the southern island of Mindanao. Under military escort, Palin visits the haunting remains of the destroyed city of Marawi and travels to Jolo, highlighting areas traditionally categorized under strict foreign travel warnings due to security concerns.
