An infant and multiple adults were critically injured Monday afternoon in Linden, New Jersey, following a violent multi-car crash triggered by a high-speed police pursuit. The incident occurred on the 200 block of East Linden Avenue just before 3 p.m., leaving a trail of mangled vehicles, debris, and a major multi-community criminal investigation in its wake.

How the Linden Multi-Car Collision Unfolded

Local police reports and surveillance footage show the chaos began when a dark Jeep Cherokee, driven by 48-year-old Darryl E. Petlock of Keansburg, sped down East Linden Avenue while pursued by law enforcement. Witnesses and video evidence show the Jeep swerving around slower traffic and a red pickup truck before veering directly into oncoming traffic.

The out-of-control vehicle collided head-on with a gray Honda Civic. The impact forced the Honda to spin completely around, losing its front bumper as it careened down the residential street and struck a parked vehicle. A second vehicle was also caught in the wreckage.

“Before we knew it, the black Jeep hit us on the driver’s side,” said John Cieri, a passenger in the red pickup truck sideswiped during the chase. “I was the passenger in the vehicle and then a Jeep struck the little Honda head on.”

Victims Transported with Critical Injuries

Emergency medical services rushed to the scene to treat the victims. Inside the heavily damaged Honda Civic were a 33-year-old woman, a 29-year-old man, and a 3-month-old infant strapped into a car seat. Witnesses reported that the impact was so severe the baby seat was dislodged onto the roadway.

All three occupants of the Honda, along with the driver of the Jeep, suffered critical injuries. Emergency responders transported them to University Hospital in Newark for advanced medical care. A third adult involved in the pileup sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Multi-Day Police Pursuit Preceded the Crash

Court documents reveal the chaotic sequence of events began a day prior on Sunday, when Keyport police initially pulled over Petlock’s Jeep Cherokee. After handing over his documents, Petlock allegedly fled the scene at a high speed.

The suspect’s movements over the following 24 hours spanned multiple municipalities:

  • Sunday Afternoon (Roselle): A Roselle police officer spotted Petlock attempting to smash the Jeep through a parking lot gate on East 11th Avenue. He sped away through multiple stop signs before officers broke off pursuit near the Elizabeth border.
  • Monday Afternoon (Elizabeth): A Flock automated camera and an Elizabeth police officer picked up Petlock near Anna Street and Jackson Avenue. He fled south on Route 1 through the Bayway Circle before officers terminated that pursuit.
  • Monday Afternoon (Linden): Approximately five minutes after the Elizabeth sighting, a Linden police officer spotted the speeding Jeep on Linden Avenue. The final pursuit ended moments later in the head-on collision.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Following the crash, law enforcement officers surrounded the Jeep with guns drawn and quickly apprehended the driver. Petlock was subsequently transported to University Hospital under police guard to be treated for critical injuries sustained in the impact.

Authorities confirmed that Petlock now faces more than a dozen serious criminal charges filed across four different communities. The charges include eluding police, criminal mischief, assault, and multiple counts of aggravated assault.

Crews from the Linden Fire Department spent hours clearing debris, towing away the four heavily damaged vehicles, and processing the crime scene. Investigators continue to review home surveillance footage, Flock camera data, and witness statements to fully piece together the timeline of the multi-jurisdictional chase.
