Nikola Jokić is a Serbian professional basketball player who serves as the starting center for the Denver Nuggets in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Widely celebrated by the nickname “The Joker,” Jokić is universally recognized as one of the greatest basketball players, passers, and centers in NBA history. Starting his professional career as a relatively unheralded second-round draft pick, he evolved into a multi-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and an NBA Champion, redefining how the center position is played across modern basketball.
Early Life, Parents, and Family Background
Born on February 19, 1995, Nikola Jokić grew up in Sombor, a small city in northern Serbia. He spent his formative years sharing a cramped two-bedroom apartment with his parents, his grandmother, and his two older brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja. His father, Branislav Jokić, worked as an agricultural engineer, while his mother, Nikolina Jokić, managed the household.
Basketball was a constant presence in the Jokić household, largely propelled by his older brothers, who were a decade older than Nikola. Both brothers played competitive basketball, with Nemanja playing college basketball in the United States for Detroit Mercy and C.W. Post. Their intense games inside the family’s small apartment using a toy hoop helped shape Nikola’s early passion and exceptional court vision. Aside from basketball, Jokić developed a deep lifelong passion for horses and competitive harness racing as a teenager, a hobby he continues to pursue during NBA offseasons.
Professional Basketball Career and Rise to Superstardom
Jokić began his organized basketball journey playing youth squads in Serbia, eventually signing with Mega Vizura (later known as Mega Basket) in Belgrade at age 17. In the 2014-15 season, he emerged as a dominant young prospect, earning Adriatic League MVP and Top Prospect honors.
The Denver Nuggets selected Jokić with the 41st overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, a selection famously announced during a late-night Taco Bell commercial break. Joining the Nuggets for the 2015-16 season, Jokić immediately exceeded expectations. He earned a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team after averaging 10 points and 7 rebounds per game.
Championship and MVP Accolades
Over the next several seasons, Denver’s offense was built entirely around Jokić’s revolutionary playmaking abilities from the center position. He earned his first NBA All-Star selection during the 2018-19 season and secured back-to-back NBA MVP awards for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 campaigns, joining elite historical company.
The pinnacle of his career arrived in the 2022-23 NBA season when he led the Denver Nuggets to the franchise’s first-ever NBA Championship. He was unanimously named the NBA Finals MVP after leading the entire postseason in total points, rebounds, and assists. Following this historic run, Jokic captured his third regular-season MVP award for the 2023-24 season. Internationally, Jokić has represented the Serbian national team, winning a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
