Kahan co-wrote and co-produced “Draw You Out” alongside Grammy-winning collaborator Aaron Dessner. Recording sessions took place at New York’s Long Pond Studio as well as Nashville’s Gold Pacific Studios and East Iris Studios. This release follows Kahan’s Billboard 200 chart-topping album, The Great Divide, and its expanded edition, The Last of the Bugs.

Joining an Elite Musical Legacy

By contributing the lead single, Kahan joins an elite group of musicians who have recorded flagship themes and major contributions for past installments of the franchise. Past contributors include Taylor Swift (“Safe and Sound,” “Eyes Open”), Lorde (“Yellow Flicker Beat”), Coldplay, and Olivia Rodrigo (“Can’t Catch Me Now”).

Speaking to Billboard during his Grammy preview cover feature, Kahan expressed deep enthusiasm for the project, noting that he has read all the books and watched every film in the series.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do and I am so grateful for the opportunity to write for this moving film, having adored the works of art by Suzanne Collins,” Kahan shared on Instagram. “I was already totally connected and inspired by the tragic yet hopeful story of Haymitch and Lenore Dove, and writing a song about the purpose, grief and perseverance through pain that they exemplify was an experience I’ll always be grateful for.”

Soundtrack and Film Details

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (The Album) is executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb. It features a diverse lineup of 29 cross-genre artists and unreleased music written specifically to capture the tone of Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel.

The cinematic adaptation, directed by Francis Lawrence, is set 24 years before the events of the original The Hunger Games trilogy. The plot centers on a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy (portrayed by Joseph Zada) from District 12 during the 50th Annual Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The ensemble cast also features Mckenna Grace, Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, and Whitney Peak.

What to Expect from “Draw You Out”

Staying true to his signature emotional style, Kahan has teased that fans should not expect a traditional uplifting battle anthem. Instead, the track leans into the raw, melancholic realities of the characters’ struggles.

“It is sad, but you’re not really coming to me if you’re looking for heartwarming,” Kahan told Billboard. “There are some uplifting things in there, but if you really listen, [I’m] still saying sad stuff. It just happens to have a cool beat behind it.”

Fans can pre-save “Draw You Out” on major streaming platforms ahead of its October 2 release. The full companion album arrives on November 13, and the film hits theaters nationwide on November 20, 2026.
