Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks was formally charged Monday with driving under the influence in connection with his March arrest in Scottsdale, Arizona, according to court records. The 30-year-old NBA player faces a Class 1 misdemeanor charge and is scheduled for an arraignment on October 28.
Police originally took Brooks into custody during a traffic stop around 1 a.m. on March 6 on Scottsdale Road, just south of Thunderbird Road. Sources close to the player and local reporting indicated that the arrest involved suspicion of marijuana use rather than alcohol.
Following the traffic stop, Scottsdale Police released body-camera footage showing an officer informing Brooks that his vehicle smelled like a dispensary. Brooks stated during the interaction that he had not smoked or consumed alcohol in the preceding six months. After completing a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer test, police placed Brooks in handcuffs before releasing him from custody about an hour and a half later.
Team Response and Legal Background
The Phoenix Suns organization acknowledged the developments through official communication following the filing of the criminal complaint.
“This charge stems from the incident last March,” Suns senior vice president of communications Stacey Mitch said in a statement. “We have addressed the matter with Dillon and have no further comment.”
The legal situation compounds an eventful period for Brooks, who is entering his 10th NBA season. In August, Brooks and the Suns agreed to a three-year, $73 million contract extension through the 2029-30 season. Last year in Phoenix, he averaged a career-high 20.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting better than 43% from the field, though he was limited to 56 games due to a fractured left hand suffered in February.
Separate Pending Traffic Case
In addition to the Scottsdale DUI charge, Brooks faces a separate misdemeanor reckless driving and speeding case stemming from a January 12 incident. In that occurrence, officers pulled him over for allegedly driving 85 mph in a 45-mph zone. That separate case is moving closer to trial, with the court setting a trial readiness conference for November 9.
Brooks and the Phoenix Suns are scheduled to open their 2026-27 NBA regular-season campaign against the Portland Trail Blazers on October 21.
