Irish police detained three suspected members of a violent burglary and vehicle theft gang following an hour-long high-speed pursuit across Dublin. The operation concluded near the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre just before 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after officers tracked the suspects from the Dublin Airport area.
According to reports from An Garda Síochána, the suspects were initially spotted by officers from the Dublin Metropolitan North Division on patrol near the Naul Road. The vehicle, a stolen Volkswagen Golf previously taken during a burglary in the Santry area, failed to stop for authorities, prompting a coordinated multi-unit response.
High-Speed Pursuit Across Dublin Motorways
The pursuit escalated rapidly as the getaway vehicle traveled against traffic on a dual carriageway and collided with multiple civilian cars along the route. Due to the dangerous driving and high speeds involved, officers deployed a coordinated containment strategy.
Specialist units, including the Garda Air Support Unit and the Armed Support Unit, collaborated with ground patrols to track and intercept the vehicle. The Volkswagen Golf eventually came to a stop near Clondalkin on the M50 motorway, where the occupants attempted to evade capture.
Arrests and Detention Details
Following the vehicle stop, the three occupants fled on foot near the shopping center. Investigators noted that the suspects attempted to discard clothing to alter their appearances and avoid identification. However, pursuing officers quickly closed the distance and restrained them.
The suspects include two males in their 20s and a juvenile in his mid-teens. All three individuals were taken into custody and are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Garda stations in north Dublin. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among civilians or police officers during the high-risk operation.
Ongoing Garda Investigation
The recovered Volkswagen Golf has been seized by investigators for a complete technical examination and forensic testing. The incident forms part of an ongoing, broader investigation into a series of recent burglaries and vehicle thefts reported across Dublin and County Meath.
An Garda Síochána has appealed to any motorists who may have witnessed the pursuit, captured dashcam footage, or experienced collisions with the suspect vehicle along the M50 and surrounding routes to come forward to assist with the ongoing criminal inquiry.
