Pope Francis delivered a strong message to healthcare personnel and sick pilgrims at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes on Sunday, warning that medical practice must never serve programmed death or assist in ending human life. Speaking at the Accueil Notre-Dame center, the pontiff addressed individuals facing severe illnesses and disabilities.
The visit comes in the wake of France’s recent legalization of assisted suicide and euthanasia earlier this summer, making the country the fifth in Europe to allow the practice. In his address to a gathering of roughly 5,000 caregivers and patients, Pope Francis criticized the measure directly.
“It is precisely in the name of this inalienable dignity of the human person that we must reject the temptation to cause death under the guise of false compassion,” Pope Francis told the audience. “What is legal is not necessarily moral.”
The Sacred Meaning of Human Vulnerability
Reflecting on the sanctuary’s annual theme, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you,” the head of the Catholic Church emphasized that human dignity remains absolute regardless of physical condition or social perception. He noted that personal worth cannot be measured or debated.
“Fragility is not hidden, but instead becomes the place of a sacred encounter,” the pope said. He encouraged individuals experiencing intense physical pain or dark horizons not to let human laws strip away their sense of self-worth.
Turning his focus to the medical community, the pontiff urged professionals to remember their core calling:
- Care for suffering individuals instead of eliminating them.
- Act as passionate defenders of human life.
- Promote authentic palliative care and research to support patients.
- Accompany the sick with deep tenderness and empathy.
Support for Church Leaders and Vulnerable Groups
Earlier on Sunday morning, the pope met with the French bishops’ conference in Paris, praising their courage in opposing the legalization of euthanasia and assisted dying. He encouraged them to keep working alongside individuals who uphold the same ethical values.
Concluding his remarks to the sick guests at the residential care facility, Pope Francis offered words of comfort and validation.
“You are not a burden,” the pope said. “You are the beating heart of our humanity and a precious treasure for the Church.”
