To secure an outright victory, a team needs to reach 15.5 points out of the 30 total points available across the five sessions. While the U.S. side requires eight wins out of the 12 Sunday singles matches to avoid a tie, the International squad needs five wins to hit the magic number.
Unlike the Ryder Cup-where the defending champion retains the trophy if the final score is even-the Presidents Cup treats a tie as a true shared outcome. Co-captains and players split possession of the hardware, holding the title jointly until the next biennial competition.
History of the Only Tie in 2003
The rule for sharing the trophy stems from a dramatic finish at the 2003 tournament held at the Links Course at Fancourt in South Africa. During that era, a total of 34 points were up for grabs, and the teams captained by Jack Nicklaus for the U.S. and Gary Player for the International side finished dead even at 17 points apiece.
That deadlock forced a sudden-death playoff. U.S. Captain Nicklaus selected world No. 1 Tiger Woods, while International Captain Player chose world No. 2 Ernie Els to represent their respective sides.
Woods and Els battled through three extra holes as daylight rapidly faded. After both players matched pars on the third playoff hole-with Woods sinking a 15-footer and Els converting from 6 feet-darkness prevented any further play. Rather than forcing the entire 24-player rosters and staff to return the following morning, Nicklaus and Player agreed to call it a tie. Following that intense event, tournament organizers officially changed the rules to eliminate extra-hole playoffs and implement the shared-trophy system used today.
