Prince Harry Opens Up About Fatherhood and Grief in MasterClass

Prince Harry recently opened up about the unexpected demands of fatherhood, his children, and his lifelong journey with grief. He shared these thoughts during an appearance in the online MasterClass titled Redefining Grief: Building Resilience Through Loss. The Duke of Suss*x shared deeply personal reflections on raising his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, alongside neuroscientist Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor.

During the session, Harry reflected on a photograph he personally captured of his children walking barefoot together in nature just before Archie’s birthday. Describing the quiet moment between the siblings, the duke explained how the scene brought him a profound sense of peace.

“I love this photo. I took this photo. This was just before Archie’s birthday. The two of them, brother and sister, at peace with each other in nature fills my heart,” Prince Harry shared. He added that he is proud of how far his family has come, noting that he feels extremely happy to have two healthy, amusing, and energetic children.

The Emotional Realities and Challenges of Parenthood

Moving beyond the peaceful snapshots, Harry offered a candid assessment of the realities of raising young children. He admitted that he faced a steep learning curve after becoming a father.

“Becoming a father is an emotional rollercoaster,” Harry explained. “I wish I’d known how hard being a father was going to be. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

When asked what specific advice he would offer to his former self before entering parenthood, the duke kept his response direct and grounded in his personal experience. He noted that his guidance to his younger self would simply be to hold on tight because the journey turns out to be an intense and unpredictable ride.

Connecting Fatherhood to the Legacy of Princess Diana

The MasterClass discussion also bridged Harry’s current role as a father with his own experiences of immense personal loss. At age 12, Harry lost his mother, the late Princess Diana, in a 1997 car crash in Paris. This event left him emotionally numb for years as he attempted to outrun his feelings, which included serving two deployments in Afghanistan during his military career.

While viewing a photograph of his mother during the session, Harry wondered aloud about what she might think of his choices today. “I find myself looking at her and wondering, what is she thinking about what I am doing right now?” he shared.

By connecting his past trauma with his present family life, Prince Harry illustrated how he continues to build emotional resilience, balance public scrutiny, and embrace the daily joys of raising Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet alongside his wife, Meghan Markle.
