England manager Thomas Tuchel has added Liverpool forward Rio Ngumoha to the matchday roster ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Nations League match against the Czech Republic at Fortuna Arena in Prague. This inclusion follows a 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley.
The 18-year-old winger replaces Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly. O’Reilly played all 90 minutes against Spain but missed Monday’s training session at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground. He failed to recover in time, resulting in his omission from the squad traveling to Prague.
Tuchel had previously expressed uncertainty regarding the availability of both O’Reilly and Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa after they sat out group training sessions due to minor issues. While Konsa passed fitness assessments and made the matchday squad, O’Reilly’s absence cleared the path for Ngumoha.
Building on International Experience
Ngumoha was originally omitted from the 23-man matchday squad against Spain due to roster depth limits. However, the teenager is now positioned to earn his second senior international appearance for the Three Lions.
The Liverpool forward previously made his international debut during a 1-0 friendly win against New Zealand in Tampa, Florida. In that fixture, an energetic half-time display earned him the player-of-the-match award. This milestone made him the fifth-youngest player in England’s history at 17 years and 281 days old.
Speaking to media outlets prior to the fixture against Spain, Ngumoha emphasized his long-term ambitions with the national team. “I’ve just got to come here and show what I can do to everyone and just make sure everyone just understands who I am,” Ngumoha said. “I’m not here just to be a side part-I want to be a mainstay in the team and hopefully I can stay.”
Fixtures and Upcoming Schedule
England’s upcoming clash against the Czech Republic represents a crucial opportunity for Tuchel’s squad to rebound from Saturday’s narrow loss to Spain. In that match, goals from Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal secured victory for the world champions despite efforts from Harry Kane and Anthony Gordon.
Following Tuesday’s fixture in Prague, England will travel to face Croatia to conclude their current international window. Once club football resumes, Ngumoha will return to Liverpool ahead of a high-profile Premier League match against Manchester City at Anfield.
