Robson Green makes his anticipated return to BBC One in The Northumbria Mysteries, an eight-part crime drama set against the sweeping landscapes and market towns of northeastern England. Filmed across Northumberland locations including Alnwick, Morpeth, Rothbury, and Bamburgh Castle, the new series premieres on Friday, October 23, at 2 p.m., with episodes simultaneously dropping on BBC iPlayer.

An Unlikely Detective Duo in the North East

The series features Green as Joe Ruby, a former criminal and gambler in a community rehabilitation program who volunteers at a local priory. Marked by past mistakes, Joe uses his underworld connections to help unravel complex local murder investigations.

He is paired with Oxford-educated Detective Inspector Rose O’Connell, played by Liz White. Described as a deep thinker with an ice-cool disposition and an evidence-based approach, DI O’Connell forms an unlikely pairing with the ex-convict as they navigate their contrasting backgrounds to solve regional crimes.

Star-Studded Cast and Crew

In addition to Green and White, the ensemble cast includes:

  • Gurjeet Singh as DS Raj Singh, an enthusiastic young detective keen to make his mark.
  • Simon Callow as Father David, the prior guiding Joe through his community rehabilitation.
  • Chris Gascoyne as ‘Ace’ Dawson.
  • Guest artists featuring Paula Wilcox, Cathy Tyson, Jason Merrells, and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Produced by Newcastle-based Lonesome Pine Productions, the drama is a central component of the BBC’s North East Creative Cluster initiative. This program is designed to strengthen regional production skills and boost local creative investment.

Broadcast Schedule and Streaming Details

The Northumbria Mysteries consists of eight 45-minute episodes broadcasting on BBC One and streaming via BBC iPlayer. The first four episodes become available on launch day, Friday, October 23, 2026, with episodes five through eight arriving on Friday, November 20, 2026, aligning with linear broadcasts.

Executive producer Lesley Douglas noted the production was a labor of love supported by the North East Production Fund, delivering on behalf of the North East Screen Industries Partnership. Music for the series features original compositions by Rich McCoull alongside a theme song written and performed by Peter Alexander Jobson.
