Russia launched its largest coordinated attack against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the spring on September 30, 2026. Striking Kyiv and 10 other regions overnight, the massive offensive disabled critical power plants, damaged residential buildings, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises, and railway lines across the country.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi confirmed that at least five people were killed in the sweeping wave of overnight strikes. In the Kyiv region, rescuers recovered the body of a child from beneath the rubble of a destroyed residential building, as confirmed by regional head Timur Tkachenko. Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported three fatalities within the capital itself, which included a utility worker killed at a warehouse building. Additional casualties and fatalities were recorded in the southern Mykolaiv region and the northeastern Sumy region, where a school was separately struck.
Scale and Impact of the Combined Energy Strikes
Prime Minister Koretskyi noted that while Moscow has systematically targeted energy infrastructure daily throughout the summer months, this assault marked the first combined strike of such a massive scale since the end of the previous heating season. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that critical infrastructure was heavily hit across the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and Rivne regions.
The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed responsibility for launching massive overnight strikes on Ukrainian facilities. They specifically highlighted the Trypilska thermal power plant-located roughly 40 kilometers from Kyiv and serving as the capital’s largest electricity supplier-as a primary target. The plant’s operator, Centrenergo, confirmed that the facility sustained significant damage.
Emergency Measures and Restoration Efforts
Following the difficult night, private energy firm DTEK worked continuously to restore power to 8,000 homes in the capital. However, state-owned grid operator Ukrenergo issued urgent warnings. They advised residents across the affected regions to limit their electricity usage and avoid running powerful electrical appliances during peak hours to stabilize the heavily strained power grid.
