Actress Selma Blair was arrested and faces multiple assault charges following an alleged disturbance aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to New York. The incident concluded when the aircraft arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport, resulting in state and federal charges after authorities reported injuries to two flight attendants, a police officer, and a medical nurse.

According to the Port Authority Police Department, law enforcement and the FBI responded to a report of a physically abusive passenger on Delta Air Lines Flight 938 late Sunday evening. Blair, 54, was taken into custody around 11 p.m. as the jet parked at the airport gate. Law enforcement officials noted that one flight attendant suffered bite marks and another sustained lacerations during the flight.

Court Arraignment and Bail Details

Blair appeared in Queens Criminal Court on Monday night and pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree assault. Prosecutors stated that the state charges stem from incidents that occurred after the flight. They specifically alleged that Blair kicked a Port Authority police officer multiple times in the face, neck, and chest while being secured to a stretcher. She was also accused of kicking a nurse in the chest during subsequent treatment at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

During the court hearing, the judge set Blair’s bail at $20,000 cash or $60,000 bond. She was released and is scheduled to return to court in January. In addition to the state charges, a federal law enforcement official confirmed that the FBI has issued Blair a notice charging her with assault related to her actions aboard the aircraft. Those federal charges will be handled through the petty violations court in Brooklyn, though an appearance date has not yet been set.

Legal Defense and Medical Context

Representing the actress in court, defense attorney Shawn Barnes argued that Blair’s actions were unintentional. Barnes explained that Blair, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, had recently managed a heavy workload and missed several doses of a powerful medication required to control severe neurological symptoms. According to her defense, hitting her head on the aircraft bulkhead, combined with high altitude and missed medication doses, plunged the actress into a state of severe confusion and disorientation.

Air traffic control audio captured the Delta pilot requesting medical personnel to meet the aircraft at the gate to treat bite marks and a bloody nose, while noting that the passenger appeared to have bashed her head. Delta Air Lines released a statement emphasizing that the carrier maintains zero tolerance for unruly or unlawful behavior, prioritizing the safety of customers and crew above all else.

Background and Advocacy Work

Blair is widely recognized for her prominent film roles in late 1990s and 2000s cinema, including Cruel Intentions (1999), Legally Blonde (2001), and Hellboy (2004). In recent years, she has shifted her public platform toward disability rights and awareness following her multiple sclerosis diagnosis. In 2023, she joined former President Joe Biden at the White House to commemorate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

This incident marks the second time Blair has faced public scrutiny regarding an in-flight disturbance. In 2016, she issued a public apology after experiencing an episode on a flight from Cancun to Los Angeles, which she attributed to an accidental mixing of alcohol and prescription medication that caused a blackout.
