A man sustained major injuries late Saturday night after fleeing a traffic stop, physically fighting with law enforcement, and crashing his vehicle into a tree in west Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.

Traffic Hazard Call Leads to Confrontation

Houston Police Department night shift officers initially responded to a traffic hazard call at approximately 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fondren Road and Richmond Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a man asleep inside a vehicle stopped directly in the intersection. Investigators stated that the individual was holding onto the driver’s side door handle while unconscious.

Officers managed to open the vehicle door to check on the motorist. However, the driver attempted to slam the door shut and engaged in a physical altercation with officers as they tried to remove him. Law enforcement officials reported smelling alcohol on the driver during the encounter.

Brief Pursuit and High-Speed Crash

Although officers successfully turned off the vehicle’s engine using its push-button ignition system, the driver managed to restart the car, shift it into gear, and speed away. Investigators are reviewing whether any officers were still holding onto the vehicle door when it accelerated.

Just five to six seconds after fleeing, having traveled several hundred feet down Richmond Avenue, the vehicle lost control along the 9200 block. It slammed into a large oak tree, flipping and rolling multiple times before coming to a rest.

Driver Hospitalized in Intensive Care

The driver, who was traveling alone, sustained severe injuries in the violent rollover crash. Emergency services transported him to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Authorities confirmed during a morning media briefing that he was alive.

No police officers were injured during the initial physical struggle or the brief pursuit. Speed was confirmed as a primary factor in the crash, and alcohol remains under active investigation as a contributing cause.

Pending Charges and Unusual Evidence

Investigators noted that various items were scattered across the roadway following the wreckage, including several California voter registration forms. Police have not yet clarified why the driver possessed these documents.

Formal criminal charges, including driving while intoxicated (DWI), remain pending as the investigation continues. Law enforcement officials stated the case will be referred to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for final charging decisions once the review concludes.
