Trump Announces $15B Iowa Steel Plant Project by Mesabi

September 28, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

President Donald Trump announced a $15 billion investment by Mesabi Metallics to construct a massive new steel-making facility in Iowa during an Oval Office event. Scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, the project will become the largest steel plant in U.S. history. Production is targeted to begin in 2030.

According to a White House official, initial development of the Iowa facility expects to yield 7.5 million tons of steel annually. It will support up to 6,000 construction jobs. Operations will eventually expand to 10 million tons per year, creating at least 1,750 permanent full-time positions.

Project Integration and Minnesota Iron Ore Mine

The mega-steel plant represents the first facility of its kind built in the United States since the 1960s. The venture relies heavily on domestic supply chains. It will use iron ore sourced from Mesabi Metallics’ newly developed $2.5 billion mine in Minnesota’s Iron Range.

The Minnesota mine project is expected to produce 7.5 million tons of iron ore annually and create 350 total jobs. This allows the entire operation to remain 100% American-made from mining to final production. Mesabi Metallics is backed by the Essar Group, an Indian multinational conglomerate.

Key Officials and Administration Goals

Mesabi Metallics CEO Joe Broking and Chairman Rewant Ruia attended the White House event alongside President Trump. They were joined by several high-ranking administration officials. These included Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, U.S. Export-Import Bank Chairman John Jovanovic, National Energy Dominance Council Executive Director Jarrod Agen, and National Security Council senior director for Global Supply Chain David Copley.

White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers emphasized the administration’s broader economic strategy in a statement regarding the project:

President Trump is delivering on his promise to rebuild American industry, reshore manufacturing, and create new jobs. Today’s announcement underscores the President’s historic efforts to revitalize the U.S. steel industry-supporting local communities, strengthening supply chains, and protecting our national security.

Economic and Political Context

The announcement arrives weeks before the November midterm elections, as the administration continues measures to protect domestic manufacturers. Earlier in his second term, Trump implemented a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports before doubling the levies to 50%.

Critics argue that these broad import duties have contributed to multi-year highs in domestic steel prices. However, numerous steel trade groups recently sent a letter crediting the tariffs with driving $47 billion in announced and underway investments. White House officials stated that the new Iowa plant serves as tangible proof of those ongoing industrial revitalization efforts.
