Turkey head coach Vincenzo Montella faced intense criticism and calls for his departure from supporters after his side suffered a 4-1 Nations League defeat against Italy in Bursa on Monday night. The bruising loss left the Turkish national team struggling at the bottom of their group and renewed immense pressure on the manager following a difficult spell that extends back through their recent major tournament outings.
Italy Establishes First-Half Dominance in Bursa
Italy established dominance early in the match. They scored three goals within the opening 30 minutes to stun the home crowd.
Alessandro Bastoni opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a header from a corner. Davide Frattesi followed quickly with a rebound finish after an initial shot was parried.
Brentford defender Michael Kayode then extended Italy’s lead to 3-0 in the 27th minute. Francesco Pio Esposito set him up unmarked inside the penalty area. The third goal prompted immediate loud whistles and resignation chants from the local Turkish supporters, who watched their team struggle badly against an aggressive Italian press.
Brief Resurgence and Final Blow
Following the break, Turkey showed signs of life straight away by pulling it back to 3-1. A massive defensive miscommunication between Gianluigi Donnarumma and Matteo Ruggeri allowed Baris Alper Yilmaz to roll the ball into an empty net for his sixth international goal.
However, hope for a comeback was short-lived. Just three minutes later, Francesco Pio Esposito struck again, heading in a rebound after Sandro Tonali’s shot hit the post to make it 4-1.
Turkey created further chances later in the game. These included a ruled-out goal for Yilmaz and a close-range miss by Kerem Aktürkoğlu. Despite these efforts, the damage from the first half proved insurmountable.
Growing Pressure on Montella
The heavy home defeat leaves Turkey pointless after two games in the UEFA Nations League. This result intensifies scrutiny on Vincenzo Montella.
Montella previously dealt with friction between fans, media critics, and the squad during earlier disappointments. He now faces renewed demands for a change in leadership as supporters voice their frustration over the team’s trajectory.
Meanwhile, the victory provided Roberto Mancini with his first win since returning for his second stint as Italy manager. This offers the Azzurri a much-needed boost ahead of their upcoming fixture against Group 1 leaders France.
