A West Virginia couple has been arrested and charged with multiple felony counts following an extensive investigation into the alleged long-term abuse and neglect of three children in their care. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrests, describing the Evans residence as a house of horrors where vulnerable minors were subjected to severe physical violence and psychological torment over several years.
Erica Lynn Sayre, 45, and her husband, Clifford Gale Sayre, 46, each face a total of six felony counts. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the charges stem from findings compiled through multiple forensic interviews, medical examinations, and the documentation of physical evidence, including scars consistent with the children’s statements.
Details of the Alleged Abuse and Neglect
Investigators stated that the three children, whose biological parents are deceased, endured years of escalating physical punishment and degrading conditions inside the home. Court documents and sheriff’s department findings detail routine beatings, strangulation, and severe deprivation of basic necessities such as food, water, and restroom access.
According to authorities, the alleged punishments included forcing the children to run barefoot on a gravel driveway, dumping soiled cat litter into their beds, smearing dog feces on their personal belongings, and making them put soiled socks into their mouths. Victims also reported being struck with household objects and electronic devices, resulting in bleeding injuries for which medical attention was reportedly denied.
In one specific incident detailed by investigators, a child reported that Clifford Sayre physically restrained her hands while Erica Sayre forcibly cut her hair with a razor blade, causing a physical injury. Investigators also noted that the children were frequently taunted and harassed regarding the deaths of their biological parents, and one child was allegedly threatened with death if she attempted to contact Child Protective Services.
Specific Charges and Legal Standing
The criminal complaints differentiate between the roles allegedly played by each adult in the household:
- Erica Lynn Sayre: Faces three counts of child abuse resulting in bodily injury and three counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury.
- Clifford Gale Sayre: Faces three counts of child neglect resulting in bodily injury and three counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury. Investigators allege he repeatedly witnessed the abuse inflicted by his wife but failed to intervene, with one child telling deputies, “mom hits us and Gale lets her.”
During police interviews, the emotional toll of the environment became starkly evident. One child became visibly distressed and told deputies, “I can’t go back to that home,” while another expressed a simple desire for “a normal life.”
Next Steps in the Judicial Process
Following the disclosure of the allegations and the collection of physical and corroborating testimonial evidence, Child Protective Services removed all three children from the home. They have since been placed in safer environments.
Both defendants have posted bond. Erica Sayre is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on November 20 at 2:00 p.m. Legal proceedings for Clifford Sayre were initiated earlier in the week. Both individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law as the judicial process examines the evidence and the children’s accounts.
