A multi-vehicle collision involving a Polk County school bus in Winter Haven, Florida, resulted in the deaths of a 10th-grade high school student and a Jeep driver on Monday morning. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the tragic accident occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. along Old Lucerne Park Road while it was still dark outside.
Details of the Multi-Vehicle Collision
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd detailed the sequence of events during a press conference on Monday. According to preliminary video reviews and law enforcement findings, a westbound white Chevrolet Malibu drifted over the center line for unknown reasons and struck the tandem rear wheels of an eastbound school bus.
The initial impact caused the bus to lose traction, tearing off one of its tires. The bus subsequently crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a silver Jeep. The Jeep caught fire upon impact, resulting in the fatal injury of its driver. A total of four vehicles were ultimately impacted in the chain-reaction crash, prompting authorities to close Lucerne Park Road in both directions until early afternoon.
Casualties and Student Transport
The school bus was carrying 39 people at the time of the crash, including 37 Winter Haven High School students, the bus driver, and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter. Authorities confirmed that a 10th-grade girl riding the bus and the driver of the silver Jeep were killed.
Emergency response efforts involved over 100 first responders. Victims were transported to local medical facilities through various means:
- 22 students were transported to a hospital on another school bus, accompanied by a Polk County Fire Rescue paramedic.
- 7 students were transported by ambulance.
- 3 students were airlifted to hospitals via emergency helicopters.
- 4 students were taken to hospitals by family members.
- The bus driver and her 9-year-old daughter were transported by ambulance.
- One additional adult involved in the crash was taken to a hospital by ambulance, while two others transported themselves.
Officials reported that between five and seven trauma alerts were issued, and at least one person remained in critical condition following the incident. Most students treated for minor injuries were released later that Monday.
Official Responses and Ongoing Investigation
Sheriff Grady Judd expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling it the most horrific bus incident the county has experienced in decades. "To have one fatality is one too many. And to have one fatality of a beautiful high school girl is just heartbreaking," Judd stated.
Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Fred Heid commended the students for their adherence to emergency evacuation training. Heid noted that safety drills helped prevent further severe injuries during the rollover and head-on impact.
The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was unarrested, remained on the scene, and is fully cooperating with investigators while stating they were on their way to work at the time of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), alongside the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, has launched an active safety investigation into the incident. Authorities have indicated that further updates will be shared during a scheduled press conference.
