Zach Bryan Wears Free Palestine Shirt at Gillette Stadium

Country music artist Zach Bryan delivered a striking visual statement during his October 2 concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. He took the stage wearing a “Free Palestine” t-shirt. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter was performing the first of two sold-out shows at the venue for his With Heaven on Tour. He was joined by members of his band who wore identical apparel.

The wardrobe choice quickly drew widespread attention and media coverage. It served as an apparent response to a recent high-profile controversy involving New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and hip-hop artist Macklemore.

The Background of the Gillette Stadium Venue Controversy

The staging choice came one week after a major touring controversy erupted involving Macklemore, Ed Sheeran, and Kraft. Macklemore had been performing as an opening act on the U.S. leg of Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour. During a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Macklemore delivered an extended onstage speech addressing the Israel-Hamas conflict. He explicitly stated, “Free Palestine,” and expressed solidarity with civilians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Intense public debate and industry backlash ensued after those remarks. Macklemore later took to social media to allege that Robert Kraft had contacted Ed Sheeran directly. According to Macklemore’s statements, Kraft stated that the rapper would not be permitted to perform at Gillette Stadium. Kraft reportedly rallied other stadium owners to issue an ultimatum to the tour: either remove Macklemore or face bans across multiple major concert venues.

Robert Kraft and Ed Sheeran’s Responses

Sheeran’s team decided to remove Macklemore from the remainder of the tour lineup due to the pressure. Sheeran subsequently issued an official statement explaining that the removal was a promoter-driven decision made after venue operators issued ultimatums. Sheeran emphasized his desire to keep the tour moving for the sake of his crew, fans, and remaining support acts.

Shortly after, Robert Kraft released a public statement confirming his opposition to Macklemore’s appearance at Gillette Stadium. Kraft cited both the onstage remarks in New Jersey and what he termed a broader history of rhetoric that he argued was deeply offensive to the Jewish community:

Based on Macklemore’s recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community, we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross that line.

Adding to the logistical disruption, Sheeran’s scheduled concerts at Gillette Stadium on September 25 and 26 were canceled entirely due to severe weather warnings associated with a powerful nor’easter hitting the Boston area.

Zach Bryan Makes His Stand

Zach Bryan stepped onto the Kraft-owned turf just days after the fallout and chose to use his platform to address the censorship and venue bans head-on. Bryan and his bandmates performed their set in front of thousands of fans in Foxborough wearing black shirts featuring the words “Free Palestine.”

The move triggered immense social media reaction. Concertgoers captured and shared footage of the band’s attire across platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter, and TikTok. Some fans and free-speech advocates praised the country star for standing in solidarity with Macklemore and the Palestinian movement. Meanwhile, representatives for Robert Kraft and Gillette Stadium did not immediately issue a public statement regarding Bryan’s clothing choice.

With a second scheduled performance at Gillette Stadium following the opening night, public attention remains fixed on whether venue management will take administrative actions or allow the remainder of Bryan’s sold-out run to proceed without further incident.
