Director Takashi Yamazaki premiered his highly anticipated monster film Godzilla Minus Zero at the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26, 2026. Selected as the festival’s Spotlight Gala screening at Alice Tully Hall, the movie serves as Toho’s direct follow-up to the 2023 Academy Award-winning hit Godzilla Minus One.
A New Crisis in Post-War Japan
Set in 1949-two years after the events of the previous film-the narrative continues the story of former military pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), his partner Noriko (Minami Hamabe), and their adopted daughter Akiko (Sae Nagatani). Japan faces a formidable new calamity with the arrival of Ghidorah, a dragon-like monster threat long feared by kaiju fans.
Yamazaki returns to handle writing, directing, and visual effects supervision. The film also reunites key cast members including Hidetaka Yoshioka as disaster-response officer Kenji Noda, while adding new faces such as Masami Nagasawa, who plays meteorologist Makoto Aoyama, and Min Tanaka.
Franchise Milestones and Creative Direction
Godzilla Minus Zero represents the 38th installment in the overall Godzilla franchise and the 34th produced by Japanese studio Toho. The project sets two significant historical milestones for the series: it is the first Japanese feature shot specifically for IMAX screens, and it is the first entry in the 70-year history of the franchise to receive an R rating, cited for violent content and bloody images.
Speaking at a press conference during the festival, Yamazaki revealed that he deliberately avoided popular fan theories circulating online after the 2023 movie. Many fans had speculated that Noriko might transform into a kaiju due to a black mark seen on her neck at the end of Godzilla Minus One.
“My goal with Minus Zero was to shock audiences and do something that they didn’t predict,” Yamazaki stated, confirming that turning Noriko into a monster was the one theory he specifically chose not to pursue.
Global Theatrical Release Schedule
Distributed by GKIDS internationally, the blockbuster sequel is scheduled for a worldwide rollout in early November following its festival debut.

The previous film, Godzilla Minus One, earned over $116 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla movie in history, while also winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. With its expanded scale, IMAX presentation, and deeper focus on post-war trauma, Godzilla Minus Zero aims to continue Toho’s successful streak on the global stage.
