Former international batsman Kevin Pietersen has officially returned to the England cricket set-up after being appointed as a specialist mentor for the men’s white-ball teams. The agreement marks Pietersen’s first official involvement with the senior national team since his international playing career came to an end in 2014.
The 46-year-old will work on a part-time basis alongside white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum as England prepares for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Pietersen’s initial duties begin during the home T20 and one-day international series against Sri Lanka.
Key Schedule and Advisory Duties
Pietersen’s mentoring agreement will cover several key series over the next two years as England builds towards the next 50-over World Cup. His schedule includes both home and away assignments:
- Late 2026: Home series against Sri Lanka (T20 and ODI formats).
- Winter 2026-27: White-ball tours to Australia and South Africa.
- Summer 2027: Home white-ball series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
- Late 2027: 50-over ICC Cricket World Cup in Southern Africa.
While his primary focus is on the limited-overs squads, Pietersen’s advisory involvement has already touched on red-ball discussions. He has held preliminary conversations with incoming Test head coach Stephen Fleming and senior batsman Joe Root ahead of upcoming Test fixtures and the next home Ashes series.
Return to the National Set-Up
Pietersen scored nearly 14,000 runs for England across all formats during his playing career and was named player of the tournament when England won the T20 World Cup in 2010. Since retiring from professional cricket in 2018, he has worked extensively as a broadcast commentator, digital content creator, and as a mentor for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
