An era has officially come to an end at local aquatic centers in Peterborough as veteran swimming instructor Lin West hangs up her whistle at the age of 82. After nearly 50 years of guiding students through the water, West leaves behind a remarkable legacy that has touched hundreds of thousands of lives in the community.
Beginning her career in the late 1970s, West taught primarily out of the Jack Hunt Pool and the Regional Pool. Over the course of her five-decade tenure, she delivered more than 30,000 swimming lessons to an estimated 400,000 students.
Reflecting on her long and dedicated journey, West noted that the core nature of the job remained largely unchanged over the years. She recalled moving from pool to pool, often taking on temporary classes to help out, only to find herself staying for years because of her deep passion for the work.
“Getting a child or an adult to be able to swim, there is no better feeling,” West said. “That is what motivated me to keep teaching for so long and I would still continue to do it now, if only my body would let me!”
Throughout her career, West’s instruction laid the foundation for numerous pupils who went on to pursue competitive swimming, work as professional lifeguards, or even become swimming teachers themselves.
Local leaders and colleagues praised her immense contributions to public health and water safety. Vivacity’s Swim Academy team celebrated her retirement with a special presentation, where Active Lifestyle Manager Emma Walker highlighted West’s positive poolside energy and her role as an inspiring mentor to both learners and fellow instructors.
Councillor Zameer Ali, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Safety, also commended her dedication, noting that individuals like West give so much to boost the physical and mental well-being of the city’s residents.
