Emergency services rushed to a large fire at a scrap yard on South Street in Glasgow during the early hours of Saturday, October 10. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deployed multiple fire appliances and specialist resources to control the blaze as thick smoke billowed across the area.

Operations Control received the first alert at 11:23 p.m. on Friday. Responding swiftly, fire authorities dispatched nine fire appliances, two high-reach appliances, and specialist equipment to tackle the flames and prevent further escalation.

Residents Report Explosions and Heavy Smoke

Local residents living near South Street reported hearing loud bangs and explosions as the fire took hold of the industrial site. Footage shared on social media captured plumes of dark smoke filling the night sky above the city.

One local resident described the ordeal, noting that hearing continuous explosions close to home was deeply unsettling. Despite the dramatic scenes and extensive property damage, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no reported casualties.

Public Safety Warnings Issued

Due to the heavy volume of smoke generated by the fire, emergency responders issued safety guidelines for the local community:

  • Nearby residents were strongly advised to keep all windows and doors securely closed as a precaution against smoke inhalation.
  • Drivers traveling through or near the affected area were instructed to keep their air conditioning switched off and air vents closed.
  • Members of the public were urged to avoid the South Street area entirely to allow emergency vehicles unhindered access.

The fire service also expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation, noting that a high volume of calls had flooded Operations Control and further emergency reports were not required while crews worked to secure the perimeter and extinguish the flames.
