Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has called on US federal lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to implement mandatory regulations for artificial intelligence. Speaking in an interview broadcast on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, September 27, 2026, Gates warned that unchecked technology in the wrong hands carries the potential to drive events resulting in a billion deaths.
“There’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools,” Gates told host Kristen Welker.
Gates stressed that the technology industry cannot rely on self-regulation to manage safety risks. He argued that government-mandated monitoring and strict legislative safeguards are necessary overhead for the industry, noting that global coordination on AI rules will ultimately prove more challenging than Cold War-era nuclear negotiations.

- Growing impacts on human relationships, youth development, and social cohesion
While discussing technological fail-safes, Gates dismissed the idea that a simple “kill switch” is sufficient protection against runaway systems. He pointed out that current systems have not yet reached a point of autonomous self-replication, but emphasized that federal oversight must address the immediate danger of bad actors exploiting modern AI capabilities.
Gates joins a growing chorus of prominent tech executives and public figures calling for enhanced government oversight.
