Los Angeles police arrested 55-year-old Jose Zayas on Oct. 2 in connection with the fatal shooting of Culver CityBus driver Bruce Rodriguez. The tragic incident followed a verbal dispute aboard a transit vehicle in the Mar Vista neighborhood on Oct. 1.

Officers with the FBI Violent Crime Apprehension Task Force and the LAPD West Bureau Homicide located and apprehended Zayas around 2:07 p.m. in the 3600 block of Motor Avenue. Authorities booked him for murder, holding him on a $3 million bail as the investigation continues.

Details of the Mar Vista Transit Shooting

The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of South Centinela and Mitchell avenues. According to investigators, an intoxicated passenger confronted the 42-year-old bus driver over a missed stop or wrong direction. The confrontation escalated quickly when the suspect pulled a handgun from a bag and fired multiple shots.

Responding officers found Rodriguez unresponsive in the driver’s seat. Emergency personnel transported him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect fled the scene on a bicycle before law enforcement arrived, prompting an intensive manhunt that ended the following afternoon.

Impact on the Culver City Community

The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the local community and transit network. Culver City Mayor Freddy Puza expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, noting that the city lost a dedicated public servant.

"We have lost a deeply valued member of our City family to a senseless act of violence," said Mayor Freddy Puza. "We are grieving the loss of someone who dedicated their time and talents to serving Culver City and who made a meaningful difference through that service every day."

In response to the tragedy, Culver City officials announced that Culver CityBus service would be suspended through the weekend. The temporary suspension allows staff and transit operators time to grieve the loss of their colleague and process the emotional toll of the incident.

Next Steps in the Investigation

LAPD detectives plan to formally present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing considerations. Authorities urge anyone with additional information regarding the shooting to contact the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division.
