Broadcaster ITV altered its prime-time television schedule on Tuesday, October 6, removing long-running soap operas Emmerdale and Coronation Street from their regular slots. The network replaced them to broadcast the UEFA Nations League fixture between England and Czechia.
The network scheduled live football coverage to run from 7:00 p.m. to 10:05 p.m. This covered the 7:45 p.m. kickoff at Wembley Stadium presented by Mark Pougatch. As a result, Emmerdale was pulled from its standard 8:00 p.m. time slot, while Coronation Street was displaced from its 8:30 p.m. broadcast window. Neither show released its daily episode early on streaming platforms ITVX or YouTube, as there was no linear broadcast scheduled for that day.
This preemption follows a series of recent sporting schedule adjustments on ITV. These include disruptions caused by the Carabao Cup and international fixtures. ITV introduced a unified 8:00 p.m. weekday drama block earlier in the year to help navigate periodic sports overhauls. However, the schedule still sees frequent changes. Meanwhile, rival network BBC One maintained its regular drama programming, airing EastEnders at its usual 7:30 p.m. time slot without interruption.
How Schedule Adjustments Affect Weekly Soap Viewership
For soap fans tracking the disruption, the missed Tuesday installment meant fewer regular weekly episodes unless networks added compensatory weekend airings. Depending on the week’s adjustments, ITV occasionally repositions episodes to Sundays or weekend slots. This ensures viewers receive their expected number of weekly visits to the Dales and the cobbles.
On weeks without alternative weekend broadcasts, the narrative simply resumes on the following weeknight. This means the weekly episode count drops from five to four. Regular scheduling resumed on Wednesday, October 7, with Emmerdale returning at 8:00 p.m. followed by Coronation Street at 8:30 p.m.
Upcoming Sports Fixtures Impacting Autumn Schedules
Viewers can expect further alterations to television listings as the autumn international football calendar progresses. Live Football on TV schedules highlight several additional weeknight fixtures scheduled for ITV1 coverage:
- Wednesday, October 28: Carabao Cup fixture (Kick-off at 7:45 p.m.)
- Thursday, November 12: International football fixture (Kick-off at 7:45 p.m.)
Fans looking to catch up on missed plotlines can rely on ITVX to stream previous episodes on demand. However, early morning 7:00 a.m. drops do not occur on days when linear broadcasts are entirely canceled due to live sports coverage.
