The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards paid a special tribute to late pop icon George Michael, featuring performances by contemporary hitmakers Raye, Teddy Swims, and Sombr. The event took place live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, 2026.
The tribute was directed by Adam Blackstone and came four decades after the release of Michael’s solo debut album, Faith. It also preceded the upcoming global releases of the George Michael: The Faith Tour live album on November 6 and a feature-length film of the same name hitting U.S. cinemas on December 11.
George Michael passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2016, at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, at the age of 53. The official cause of death was determined to be dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver.
A Multi-Generational Celebration of Music
Returning producer Van Toffler highlighted that the trio of younger artists-ranging in age from 21 to 33-demonstrated how far Michael’s musical legacy has reached across new generations. During his lifetime, Michael earned four VMA wins and received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award in September 1989.
The 2026 awards ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and broadcast live on CBS and MTV, with streaming available on Paramount+. Alongside the George Michael tribute, the night featured major moments including an opening performance by Madonna and special honors for Taylor Swift and Nirvana.
Artist Appearances and Upcoming Tours
Each of the three artists participating in the tribute brought their own milestone moments to the 2026 VMAs:
- Raye: Made her VMAs performance debut with both a solo set and participation in the tribute. She entered the night with two nominations, including Song of the Year for “Where Is My Husband!”.
- Sombr: Returned to the VMA stage following a three-nomination showing, including Song of the Summer and Best Alternative. He is slated to embark on his You Are the Reason global arena tour.
- Teddy Swims: Returned to the VMA stage for the first time since 2024, supporting his latest single “Perfect Man” and his upcoming album Ugly, arriving January 22.
The tribute underscored the lasting impact of Michael’s catalog, which includes 10 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.
