Law enforcement officials in Reading, Massachusetts, have launched an urgent search for 22-year-old Ryan Hanafin in connection with the death of his mother, 49-year-old Andria Hanafin. The incident is being investigated as an apparent homicide.
Investigation Overview
The investigation began early Thursday morning after Reading police received a 911 call at approximately 12:38 a.m. Officers arrived at a residence on Center Avenue, where they discovered Andria Hanafin deceased in the kitchen. She had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan stated that the victim’s husband, Matthew Hanafin, discovered the body. The couple’s younger son had last seen Andria Hanafin alive around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday before leaving the home to spend time with friends.
Search for Person of Interest
Police are actively searching for Ryan Hanafin, who is considered a person of interest. Authorities have warned the public that the 22-year-old is considered armed and dangerous. While Hanafin previously held a valid license to carry firearms, Reading police have suspended his permit.
District Attorney Ryan noted that the family had no prior history of police intervention. She described the tragedy as a domestic dispute, stating, “It’s shocking. It’s tragic. It’s alleged domestic violence at this point, although not the traditional domestic violence situation that we think of.”

- License Plate: Massachusetts 2PSY15
- Last Known Location: The vehicle was reportedly spotted on Interstate 93 in the Tewksbury area.
- Physical Description: Ryan Hanafin is approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall.
