Hull City Council has announced a significant traffic disruption as it prepares to close the Wright Street junction with Freetown Way. The closure begins on Monday, 19 October 2026, and is scheduled to remain in place until March 2027.
This closure is a key phase of the Freetown Way improvement scheme. This infrastructure project aims to restore two lanes of traffic in each direction while upgrading facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. These improvements are designed to resolve traffic congestion issues that have persisted since the road layout was modified in 2020.
Diversion Routes and Traffic Management
To manage traffic during the closure, the council has established signed diversion routes:
- General Traffic: Vehicles will be directed via George Street, Bond Street, and Albion Street.
- Left-Turning Traffic: Drivers intending to turn left into Wright Street must follow a diversion via Ferensway, Spencer Street, and Prospect Street.
Narrow lanes will remain in operation on Freetown Way to assist traffic flow. Additionally, the southern footway between Pryme Street and Wright Street will remain closed. Pedestrians should follow signage toward safe crossing points at Blundell’s Corner and Charles Street.
Project Background
The project is being delivered by Hull-based contractor PBS Construction. Work began in September 2026, focusing on the southern footway, where crews have been excavating for new drainage and kerb installations.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, acknowledged the impact on commuters. “We recognise that closing Wright Street will cause disruption, particularly for those who regularly travel through this part of the city,” he stated. “We will work with the contractor to keep that disruption to a minimum and ensure clear diversions are in place.”
Future Phases
The council is using a phased approach to keep the project on schedule. While work at the Wright Street junction proceeds, the local authority has begun the bidding process for the remaining project phases. Officials expect to appoint a contractor for the final stages early in the New Year to maintain continuous progress.
Residents and businesses can find project updates and real-time traffic information on the Travel Hull website and social media channels.
