Reality television personalities Cory Wharton and Taylor Selfridge have officially confirmed their separation after nearly a decade together. The couple, well-known for their appearances across the MTV network including Teen Mom and Ex on the Beach, announced their breakup on October 8. They cited differing paths forward while keeping their primary focus on their two young daughters, Mila, 6, and Maya, 3.
Wharton, 35, shared an Instagram statement addressing the split. He characterized it as a new phase of life and admitted to shortcomings within the relationship. Wharton also shares a third daughter, Ryder, 9, with his ex Cheyenne Floyd.
“Taylor and I have decided to go our separate ways. As hard as that is to say publicly, I think it’s important to be honest about where my life is at this moment,” Wharton wrote. He added an apology to Selfridge, noting that things did not work out as planned and acknowledging that there were times he could have been better.
Reasons Behind the Split and Recent Tensions
Selfridge offered a direct statement regarding the end of their nine-year relationship via her Instagram Story. She wrote, “Yes I left. I was sick of not getting basic respect from the person I was with for 9 years and the father of my two children. I’m sure everyone could tell the last few years. I deserve more than that and I’ll get it. End of story.”
The breakup follows months of public scrutiny and relationship hurdles. Tension intensified after Wharton appeared on season 42 of MTV’s The Challenge, currently airing on Paramount+. During filming, Wharton developed a friendship and exchanged flirtations with fellow competitor Izzy Fairthorne. Although the interaction did not turn physical, Wharton publicly apologized for crossing boundaries and admitted to poor behavior.
“I’m not trying to put the blame on anybody but myself. I’m a big boy. I knew what I was doing,” Wharton wrote via X in September regarding the incident. He subsequently expressed regret and noted intentions to seek therapy and work on personal growth.
A Long History of Ups and Downs
Wharton and Selfridge first crossed paths in November 2017 while filming MTV’s reality dating show Ex on the Beach. Over the years, their relationship weathered multiple public tests, including past trust issues. During a March 2024 episode of Teen Mom: Family Reunion, Wharton publicly admitted to infidelity early in their relationship, describing it as a mistake that continued to weigh heavily on their partnership.
Despite these challenges, the couple also navigated severe family health crises together. In 2024, they faced a major scare when their youngest daughter was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and underwent open-heart surgery. Both parents later noted that the stressful medical ordeal temporarily brought them closer as they supported their child through recovery.
Looking Forward as Co-Parents
Following the breakup announcement, both reality stars emphasized that their primary responsibility remains their children. Wharton stressed that his immediate future centers on fatherhood, self-reflection, and healing.
“This chapter is about them, but it’s also about me doing the work that I need on myself – learning from my mistakes, growing, healing and becoming the best version of myself I can be,” Wharton shared. He also thanked his family and friends for providing a support system during the transition.
