Newfoundland Sees Sun While Rain Crosses Labrador Thursday

Residents across Newfoundland and Labrador experienced contrasting weather conditions on Thursday, October 8. Sunshine and cloud cover dominated most of Newfoundland while a light system moved across Labrador, according to the NTV Weather Centre.

NTV meteorologist Ryan Harding reported that southern winds helped push daytime temperatures higher across much of the province. Western and central parts of Newfoundland started the morning under cloudy skies. Conditions cleared through the morning hours, allowing most regions to enjoy a mix of sun and cloud with daytime highs reaching the mid to high teens.

The Northern Peninsula served as the primary exception to the clear conditions on the island. That region experienced between 2 and 4 mm of rain falling between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Forecasters noted that rain is expected to return to the West Coast late Thursday evening through the overnight hours before spreading eastward into Friday.

Contrasting Weather Systems Across The Big Land

Meanwhile, mainland Labrador faced a cooler start to the day. An overnight period left most regions hovering between -1 and plus 1 degrees Celsius. However, a shifting south wind brought enough warmth to “The Big Land” to transition early morning wet snow into plain rain as the day progressed.

Precipitation totals across Labrador averaged around 5 mm as a whole. Labrador West recorded slightly lower totals in areas where wet snow lingered into the morning hours. In contrast, Happy Valley-Goose Bay saw higher accumulation, sitting in the 5 to 10 mm range after spending extended time under active rain clouds.

The light weather system progressed from south to north and west to east throughout the day. It took until the evening hours to finally reach the North Coast.

Regional Weather Summary For Thursday

  • Newfoundland: Mostly sun and cloud following a cloudy morning in western and central areas. Daytime highs reached the mid to high teens.
  • Northern Peninsula: Received 2-4 mm of rain between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • Labrador: Started cool with temperatures between -1°C and 1°C, transitioning from early morning wet snow to plain rain.
  • Happy Valley-Goose Bay: Recorded 5-10 mm of total rainfall under steady afternoon clouds.

Winds across the province dialed back compared to Wednesday’s conditions. They shifted to a southerly direction that supported the above-seasonal daytime highs on the island. Forecasters advise residents traveling across western coastal routes to prepare for the return of rain late Thursday evening.
