Two Latvian nationals were arrested inside the perimeter of RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire. Security patrols discovered a breach in the base fence, according to Counter Terrorism Policing London and the BBC. The facility is heavily utilized by US and NATO intelligence operations.

The suspects, aged 36 and 32, both reside in the United Kingdom. Law enforcement apprehended the pair several hours after a Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) security patrol identified an abandoned vehicle near the base at approximately 22:00 BST.

Details of the Perimeter Breach and Initial Arrests

Following the discovery of the abandoned car, a joint search effort involving the Ministry of Defence Police and Cambridgeshire Constabulary uncovered a small breach in the facility fence. The two men were subsequently located and arrested inside the secure perimeter.

Police initially took the pair into custody on suspicion of trespassing on a prohibited site and criminal damage. Bomb squad officers and specialist explosive ordnance disposal teams were deployed to examine the abandoned vehicle as a precaution, leading to temporary road closures and cordons in the Glatton area, including parts of the A1M. Authorities later lifted the cordons after confirming that nothing of suspicious concern was identified inside the vehicle.

National Security Act Charges and Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation progressed, the suspects faced upgraded legal scrutiny. Authorities further arrested the two men under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023. This law penalizes entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom.

Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the inquiry into the incident. Commander Helen Flanagan noted that investigators are examining any potential motivations behind the breach while keeping an open mind. In tandem with the site arrests, specialist officers executed searches at two residential addresses in the Peterborough area.

Context Surrounding UK Military Sites

Security officials emphasized that the incident at RAF Molesworth is not currently linked to a separate high-profile security event involving RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire that occurred weeks prior. RAF Molesworth serves as a vital strategic location. It houses intelligence operations centers for US European and Africa commands, alongside the NATO Intelligence Fusion Centre. It does not operate as an active flying station.

The Ministry of Defence reiterated its commitment to facility security. The department stated that defence sites maintain a multi-layered protective approach consisting of physical barriers, active patrols, constant surveillance, monitoring systems, and counter-drone capabilities. Police continue to urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near critical national infrastructure.
