Retired professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko is stepping in to cover approximately $30,000 in individual and federal income taxes owed by his late ex-fiancée, Hayden Panettiere. He is taking this action to safeguard her estate and secure their 11-year-old daughter Kaya’s inheritance.
According to court documents obtained from Los Angeles legal proceedings, Klitschko plans to use his personal funds to pay the tax bill, which is due on October 15. This measure prevents unnecessary interest and financial penalties from mounting against Panettiere’s estate before a formal administrator is appointed.
Protecting Kaya’s Inheritance and Estate Rights
Panettiere passed away on August 16 at the age of 36 in Greenville, South Carolina. Following her unexpected death, court reports confirmed that the Heroes and Nashville star died from the accidental toxic effects of multiple substances, including fentanyl. She is survived solely by her daughter, Kaya.
In his court filings, Klitschko stated that he expects full reimbursement from the probate estate once it is officially established and a personal representative takes charge. The former heavyweight champion has been proactive in legal channels, recently winning temporary guardianship of Kaya’s estate to ensure the proper management of his daughter’s financial future.
Ongoing Legal Hurdles Over Missing Assets
Along with covering the tax liabilities, Klitschko’s legal team has raised urgent concerns regarding the actress’s personal property. Previous court documents indicated that certain belongings, including valuable jewelry, went missing or ended up in a local pawn shop.
Klitschko’s attorneys noted that because no personal representative was initially named to manage Panettiere’s affairs, law enforcement was restricted from sharing specific item information without direct authorization. The temporary guardianship designation provides Klitschko with the legal standing required to interface with law enforcement, investigate missing property, and nominate an estate administrator to prevent further asset loss.
A Shared History and Final Tributes
Klitschko and Panettiere shared a nearly decade-long, on-and-off relationship that began in 2009. The couple became engaged in 2013 and welcomed Kaya in December 2014 before separating amicably in 2018. Following their split, Panettiere made the decision to grant full custody of Kaya to Klitschko as she navigated personal battles with postpartum depression and addiction. Kaya subsequently resided with her father.
Following news of Panettiere’s passing, Klitschko shared an emotional tribute on social media, honoring her talent, her role as a mother, and the profound impact she had on his life.
