Sebastian Maniscalco Responds to SiriusXM Raw Comedy Backlash

October 9, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco has addressed widespread criticism within the stand-up community. This follows the decision by SiriusXM to replace its long-running Raw Comedy channel with his own dedicated network, Maniscalco’s Comedy Radio.

The controversy ignited after SiriusXM phased out Channel 99. The channel previously served as a 24-hour platform featuring rotation sets from more than 800 comedians without hosts. Its closure removed approximately 500 working-class acts from the lineup. It also cut off an important passive royalty stream, where independent performers reportedly earned around $15 per radio spin.

In response to the growing uproar from advocacy groups and high-profile entertainers, the 53-year-old comedian took to Instagram Stories on October 8, 2026, to clarify his position. He explicitly denied any personal involvement in removing the legacy platform.

“This goes out to all my fellow comedians,” Maniscalco said in his video message. “I want to let you know I heard you, I support you, I love you. I know how hard the grind is; believe me, I’ve been there. I had nothing to do with removing the Raw Comedy from SiriusXM. That was a SiriusXM decision.”

Maniscalco added that he plans to collaborate directly with the broadcaster to highlight a broad mix of voices across the industry. This will span emerging newcomers to established veterans.

Industry Backlash and Advocacy Group Concerns

The transition of Channel 99 sparked immediate pushback from the nonprofit organization Stand Up for Stand Up. The group warned that the programming shift heavily favors the top 50 celebrity acts at the expense of developing talent. Several prominent comedians echoed these concerns publicly, calling on Maniscalco to use his influence to reverse the change.

Comedians Patton Oswalt, Margaret Cho, Michelle Wolf, Dan Soder, and Liz Miele voiced sharp criticisms on social media and industry platforms. They emphasized that losing the Raw Comedy channel deals a heavy blow to regional and lesser-known comics. These artists relied on the platform for audience discovery and financial assistance through performance royalties.

Oswalt posted a video appeal urging Maniscalco to intervene. Meanwhile, Miele pointed out that a format focused strictly on mainstream headliners creates severe barriers for independent artists trying to build sustainable careers.

SiriusXM’s Official Explanation

Following Maniscalco’s statement, SiriusXM released an official response to clarify the timeline of the channel overhaul. The broadcaster stated that the decision to terminate Raw Comedy was driven by low ratings and underperformance long before Maniscalco agreed to join the platform’s lineup.

  • SiriusXM confirmed the Raw Comedy cancellation stemmed from ratings data gathered prior to the new partnership.
  • The company noted that it remains committed to featuring comedians at various career stages across its broader catalog of channels.
  • Industry insiders indicated that select acts previously featured on Channel 99 may transition to alternative comedy offerings within the SiriusXM ecosystem.

As the network rolls out its updated programming slate under Maniscalco’s curation, industry observers and independent comics continue to monitor the platform. They are watching to see if it will successfully rebuild its support network for emerging stand-up talent.
