Macao set new records for average daily and single-day visitor arrivals during China’s seven-day National Day holiday. Cultural events and fireworks displays attracted travelers across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The Macao Government Tourism Office announced the milestones, highlighting strong economic momentum and high engagement across local hospitality and entertainment sectors.
According to figures released by the tourism office, daily arrivals averaged 163,000 throughout the holiday period, marking a 15.5 percent increase compared to the previous year. Visitor traffic peaked on October 4, registering a single-day record of 210,276 arrivals. Hotel occupancy averaged more than 90 percent across the seven days, representing a 3.1 percentage point increase compared to the same holiday period in previous cycles.
Tourism Growth and Visitor Metrics
The influx of travelers began building momentum before the official holiday start. Inbound trips reached approximately 920,000 between October 1 and 5, according to reports from China Daily Hong Kong. The first three days alone accounted for 540,000 trips, averaging 180,000 daily and reflecting a 27.4 percent year-over-year increase.
Market analysts noted that visitor numbers rose sharply during the first four days. Arrivals climbed from roughly 170,000 on October 1 to 179,000 on October 2 and nearly 192,000 on October 3. Traffic experienced a natural tapering during the final days of the Golden Week. By October 7, visitor volume slowed to approximately 91,000 arrivals, bringing the total tally for the full seven-day window to roughly 1.14 million.
Festive Programming and Community Engagement
To maximize visitor engagement and prolong stays, the Macao Government Tourism Office, local businesses, and community organizations collaborated on a robust schedule of events. Key attractions included:
- The Macao International Fireworks Display Contest lighting up the waterfront.
- A sprawling waterfront fireworks carnival featuring food stalls, live performances, and interactive games near the Macao Science Center.
- Temporary pedestrian zones established around Rua de Nossa Senhora do Amparo and Taipa Village to encourage exploration of historic districts.
- Free admission and special operating hours at cultural institutions like the Macao Grand Prix Museum.
Coordinated promotional efforts and diverse community events successfully encouraged travelers to venture beyond major resort complexes. This distributed economic activity into local neighborhoods and small businesses throughout the Special Administrative Region.
Regulatory Oversight and Safety Measures
Alongside promotional activities, local government entities maintained strict supervisory measures to safeguard tourism quality. Interdepartmental teams-including the Consumer Council, the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, and the Macao Customs Service-conducted routine inspections at ports of entry, shopping centers, and hotels.
Authorities reported smooth operations overall. Tourism hotlines and information counters stood by around the clock to assist visitors with inquiries regarding hotel reservations, transport, and service quality.
