Malibu and Los Angeles County beaches are facing hazardous coastal conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA has issued warnings for high surf, possible flooding, and dangerous ocean conditions affecting local shores and nearby areas.

According to the National Weather Service, south-facing beaches-most notably Long Beach, Malibu, and Avalon-are exceptionally vulnerable to damaging seawater flooding. Other regional beaches and harbors are also expected to experience minor coastal flooding. This is driven by swells from multiple directions, low-pressure tidal enhancements, rain, and wind.
Forecast Details and Expected Hazards
The NWS forecast calls for high surf ranging between 4 and 7 feet. This will be accompanied by strong, unpredictable rip currents. Additionally, morning high tides reaching between 7.3 and 7.6 feet are anticipated across the affected coastal zones.
Authorities note that Sunday carries a wide range of potential outcomes. Coastal flooding impacts could either match previous days or become significantly intensified. Significant beach erosion is widely expected throughout the advisory window. This increases the risk of ocean drowning as powerful breaking waves threaten to wash people off rocks and beaches, capsize small boats near shore, and damage coastal roads and structures.
Local Emergency Response and Preparations
In anticipation of the severe weather, the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors (DBH) has initiated preventive measures along county beaches. These efforts include constructing and maintaining protective sand berms, relocating vulnerable lifeguard towers further away from the shoreline, and closely monitoring erosion-prone areas.
DBH continues to coordinate directly with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and local emergency agencies to monitor changing conditions and deploy response units as necessary.
Safety Recommendations for Beachgoers and Residents
Local and county officials strongly urge residents, motorists, and beachgoers to adhere to safety guidelines while the warnings remain active:
- Check in with the nearest lifeguard for daily ocean conditions and hazards before entering the water.
- Know your limits, swim or surf exclusively in front of an open lifeguard tower, and never swim alone.
- Keep a safe distance from piers, stay entirely off rocks and jetties, and never turn your back to the ocean.
- Stay out of the water near storm drains or areas flagged under Department of Public Health ocean water use warnings.
- Stay off beaches, coastal walkways, and flooded roadways; never drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
- Heed all instructions and emergency alert notifications issued by local authorities and emergency responders.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local news broadcasts closely for weather updates and visit ready.lacounty.gov or alert.lacounty.gov to register for emergency alerts and access further preparedness resources.
