A Philadelphia police officer has died after being shot while responding to a reported armed man in West Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026. Officer Shane Seiber, a 40-year-old 10-year veteran of the force, succumbed to his injuries after sustaining three gunshot wounds during the early morning encounter, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel.

The incident began shortly after 12:20 a.m. when officers from the 19th District were dispatched to the 100 block of North 52nd Street following reports of a man with a gun on a porch. Officials stated that when the officers arrived at the location around 12:50 a.m., they were immediately met with heavy gunfire.

During the exchange, Seiber and his partner were critically wounded. Seiber was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where his family was by his side before he passed away. He leaves behind a wife, a 7-year-old son, and a 3-year-old daughter.

The second officer, a 33-year-old father of five, sustained 12 gunshot wounds. Commissioner Bethel reported that the second officer underwent surgery and remained hospitalized in stable condition, though he is not yet out of the woods.

Suspect Apprehended Following SWAT Response

After the initial shooting, the suspect fled into an alleyway, firing shots at additional responding officers who were not struck. A perimeter was established, and a tactical SWAT team responded to the scene.

Authorities located the suspect hiding in a nearby tree and took him into custody following a neighborhood lockdown. Investigators recovered three firearms from the scene, including two handguns and a shotgun. According to police leadership, one of the recovered handguns belonged to one of the wounded officers.

Official Reactions and Calls for Legislative Reform

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker addressed the tragedy during a Saturday press conference, emphasizing the profound risks law enforcement officers face daily. She called upon state leaders to evaluate public safety frameworks and announced plans to seek legislation expanding Pennsylvania’s involuntary commitment laws.

“We are coming to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and seek legislation that will expand involuntary commitment laws to cover not only severe mental illness, but substance use disorder and any kind of mental and/or behavioral challenge that could interfere with Philadelphia’s ability to keep itself safe,” Mayor Parker stated.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro released a statement honoring Officer Seiber’s service and ordered U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff across the commonwealth. “Our law enforcement officers are the very best of us,” Shapiro said. “They put their lives on the line every day, running towards danger to keep their fellow Pennsylvanians safe.”

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as local authorities and the District Attorney’s office prepare formal charges against the suspect in custody.
