The North Carolina State Fair opens its gates on October 15 in Raleigh, bringing major upgrades to the traditional 10-day event. Fair officials report that this year’s highlights include a brand-new $25 million food hall, the massive America 250 Wheel Ferris wheel, and more than 80 novel food items designed to thrill culinary enthusiasts. The annual autumn celebration consistently draws nearly one million visitors to the grounds.
The centerpiece of the infrastructure updates is the new 30,000-square-foot Midway Event Center. According to local reports from the News & Observer, this modern facility replaces the former Restaurant Row building, which was demolished following the 2023 fair. While the building currently operates under its construction title, it will eventually receive a permanent food hall name. It is strategically planned to host year-round events beyond the fair’s standard schedule.
A Lasting Destination for Raleigh
Fair manager Ken Yelverton noted that the new multi-million-dollar structure serves as a lasting destination for the community rather than just a temporary setup. The current layout accommodates temporary vendor spaces for the 2026 events. Long-term blueprints incorporate permanent housing for up to eight food vendors in future phases.
Key Features of the 2025 Fair Additions:
- The Midway Event Center: A 30,000-square-foot multi-use facility replacing Restaurant Row.
- Year-Round Utility: Designed to host events and food vendors outside the traditional 10-day fair window.
- The America 250 Wheel: A towering new Ferris wheel attraction offering expansive views of the fairgrounds.
- Culinary Innovations: Over 80 brand-new food items introduced by regional vendors.
Expanded Attractions and Culinary Variety
Alongside the infrastructure improvements, returning and first-time attendees can experience an extensive lineup of entertainment. The introduction of the America 250 Wheel adds a prominent landmark to the skyline. It joins classic agricultural exhibits, livestock competitions, and grandstand concerts. Meanwhile, the debut of more than 80 unique food items continues the fair’s tradition of culinary experimentation. These offerings feature deep-fried delicacies, localized barbecue creations, and sweet novelties.
With nearly one million people expected to pass through the turnstiles over the 10-day run, the new Midway Event Center and expanded attractions represent the most significant operational upgrade to the Raleigh fairgrounds in recent years. City and fair officials will monitor the venue’s performance to guide future expansions of the year-round programming.
