Mexican singer Lucero has revisited her brief yet intense romance with the late Chilean television presenter Felipe Camiroaga, shedding light on a relationship that began over three decades ago. Speaking candidly on the podcast Cara a Cara con Rodner, hosted by Rodner Figueroa, Lucero recalled how the pair first crossed paths and the practical reasons that ultimately kept them apart.
The connection was forged during the Viña del Mar Festival in Chile in 1992. At the time, Lucero was just 22 years old, serving as a member of the festival’s jury and earning the title of Queen of the Festival. Camiroaga, a prominent and widely admired figure in Chilean broadcasting, was working as a presenter on the event.
A Whirlwind Romance in Viña del Mar
Reflecting on their initial encounters, Lucero described a strong, immediate attraction. “When I went to the Viña del Mar Festival, I was already young, a woman, and I met Felipe Camiroaga, who was a very handsome presenter,” she shared during the interview. She noted that while the timeframe was brief, the emotional impact was profound.
Far from ending when the festival concluded, the connection persisted. The artists continued to see each other whenever their respective travel schedules and professional commitments brought them to each other’s home countries-with Lucero visiting Chile or Camiroaga traveling to Mexico.
Why the Relationship Did Not Continue
Despite the genuine affection between them, distance and demanding careers presented insurmountable hurdles for a long-term commitment. Neither artist was willing to step away from their established path in the entertainment industry.
Recognizing the limitations imposed by their professional lives, the couple sat down to discuss their future objectively.
Reflecting on Camiroaga’s Legacy and Tragic Death
The conversation also touched upon the untimely passing of Felipe Camiroaga, who died on September 2, 2011, at the age of 44, in a tragic plane crash over the Juan Fernández archipelago. The accident claimed the lives of 21 people, including members of his television production crew and representatives of humanitarian organizations.
Looking back, Lucero admitted to wondering how alternate choices might have altered the timeline of their lives, though she acknowledged the uncertainty of fate.
