Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster remains closed to the public as authorities investigate the tragic death of a man who entered an Amur tiger enclosure and was fatally attacked. The incident occurred at approximately 13:30 BST on Saturday, leading to the immediate evacuation and shutdown of the popular wildlife attraction.

Incident Details and Eyewitness Accounts

Emergency services, including South Yorkshire Police and an air ambulance, rushed to the scene following reports that a man had scaled barriers. He dropped roughly 12 to 15 feet from a raised visitor walkway into the park’s “Land of the Tigers” habitat. Despite the swift response of emergency personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported that the unnamed individual wore Apple AirPods and paced near the viewing platform before entering the pen. Several visitors stated that the man appeared detached from reality. Some recounted that he paused, danced, or bowed down on all fours in front of the tiger before the animal reacted. Park rangers intervened quickly, deploying warning shots into the floor to deter the animal and manage the chaotic scene.

Park Response and Status of the Tiger

In official statements released following the tragedy, park management confirmed that the Amur tiger involved in the incident-named Altai-remains safe and well within its enclosure. Crucially, park officials addressed widespread public inquiries by explicitly confirming that Altai will not be euthanised.

Management also expressed profound grief regarding the incident. They noted that staff members present during the attack were deeply affected and are currently receiving professional specialist support. South Yorkshire Police have formally notified the victim’s family, providing ongoing support through specialist officers while urging the public to refrain from sharing distressing video footage circulating on social media platforms.

Local Reactions and Park Closure Duration

The sudden closure disrupted weekend operations, leaving visitors and ticketholders awaiting updates. While early booking schedules suggested a potential reopening, management confirmed the park would extend its closure into Monday, promising full refunds or rescheduling options for affected ticketholders over the coming days.

Local and national figures expressed deep sorrow over the event. Foreign Secretary and Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband issued a statement expressing his heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and gratitude toward emergency crews. Lee Pitcher, MP for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, similarly praised the professionalism and rapid response of local emergency services during the distressing ordeal.

About the Land of the Tigers Habitat

Opened in 2011, the purpose-built two-acre reserve houses endangered Amur tigers, a rare subspecies with only around 500 individuals remaining in the wild. The enclosure features an extensive 300-yard raised walkway. This walkway gives visitors a clear view of woodlands, grasslands, and a waterfall pool while maintaining separation between the public and the big cats.

Investigations led by South Yorkshire Police and park authorities remain ongoing as officials work to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the breach of the enclosure.
