A man has died after being attacked by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in South Yorkshire, emergency services and police have confirmed. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, prompting the immediate evacuation of the popular tourist attraction and a heavy response from emergency services.

Details of the Fatal Incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

South Yorkshire Police stated that officers were called to the wildlife park, located near Doncaster, at approximately 1:35 pm local time following reports that a man had entered one of the facility’s restricted tiger enclosures. Emergency services, including two land ambulances, a doctor, and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, rushed to the scene.

Despite the prompt arrival and best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining severe injuries. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the victim, though specialist officers are supporting his grieving family.

Eyewitnesses at the park reported chaotic scenes as alarms were raised and visitors were calmly escorted away by park staff. Videos circulating online captured portions of the encounter, leading local law enforcement to issue public appeals urging citizens not to share distressing footage of the event.

Status of the Animal and Public Safety Assurance

Addressing immediate concerns regarding the safety of visitors and the welfare of the animals, South Yorkshire Police confirmed that there was no wider risk to the general public. The tiger involved in the incident, believed to be a five-year-old male Amur tiger named Altai, remained securely inside the enclosure and was uninjured during the encounter.

According to park records, Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened its doors in 2009, later introducing its flagship “Land of the Tigers” exhibit in 2011. The purpose-built 0.4-hectare reserve is designed for endangered Amur tigers, also referred to as Siberian tigers, and features a raised viewing walkway for visitors.

Park Closure and Ongoing Investigation

In response to the tragedy, park management activated emergency protocols and cooperated fully with local authorities to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the breach. Yorkshire Wildlife Park released an official statement confirming the closure of the grounds for the remainder of the weekend.

“We can confirm that a serious incident has occurred today at the tiger enclosure,” park officials stated. “Our emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and emergency services are currently attending the scene. The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff, and animals remain our highest priority.”

Local leaders, including Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the tragedy. Police inquiries remain active as investigators piece together how the man gained access to the restricted area.
