Three Cold Fronts to Intensify Rain in Belo Horizonte

Heavy rainfall is projected to persist across Belo Horizonte and its surrounding metropolitan area through the end of October. Regional forecasts show that up to three separate cold fronts will sweep across Minas Gerais, significantly increasing the risk of urban flooding and weather-related property damage.

Meteorologist Ruibran dos Reis, speaking with Climatempo, estimates that total rainfall accumulation could reach between 150 and 200 millimeters in localized areas. This volume places expected precipitation well above the city’s historical October monthly average of 110.1 millimeters.

Data from Belo Horizonte Civil Defense and municipal hydrometeorological stations indicates that four of the city’s administrative regions already surpassed their typical monthly rainfall averages by 9 a.m. on Thursday, October 15. Additional storms over the subsequent weeks will keep temperatures ranging between 19°C and 29°C during the second half of the month.

Timeline of Incoming Cold Fronts

The progression of weather systems driving the heavy downpours began mid-month:

  • First Cold Front: Reached Minas Gerais on Friday, October 16, bringing steady, moderate rain through Saturday, October 17.
  • Interim Showers: Afternoon storms and scattered showers were recorded on Sunday, October 18.
  • Second System: Anticipated to arrive around October 23, renewing heavy precipitation risks.
  • Third System: Projected to impact the state in the final days of October, cementing a notably wet finish to the month.

The Impact on Infrastructure

Ground saturation levels are rising rapidly due to repeated storms, and municipal authorities remain on high alert. Urban areas vulnerable to flash flooding, steep hillsides prone to soil erosion, and low-lying transportation corridors are under close observation by local emergency services.

“Rainfall totals could reach 150 to 200 millimeters in certain sectors, which substantially exceeds our standard baseline for October,” noted meteorologist Ruibran dos Reis.

Residents in high-risk zones should monitor official updates from Belo Horizonte Civil Defense. People are advised to avoid crossing flooded streets and to heed evacuation alerts if conditions deteriorate sharply with the arrival of the upcoming cold fronts.
