Residents in Memphis and the surrounding Mid-South region are bracing for a sharp change in weather conditions. According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a strong cold front is sweeping through the area, bringing the first pronounced taste of autumn from Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 18. The upcoming weekend will feature sunny skies, daytime highs in the 60s and 70s, and crisp overnight lows primarily dipping into the 40s.
The sudden shift arrives on the heels of an unseasonably warm stretch across the region. Earlier in the week, daytime temperatures in nearby areas such as Ripley surged between 90 and 92 degrees from Monday through Thursday. However, the advancing cold front is cutting through the warmth, dropping temperatures sharply as it crosses the Mid-South.
Breezy Conditions and Sharp Temperature Drop
Friday, Oct. 16, marks the transition from intense heat to cooler conditions. The National Weather Service forecast calls for breezy weather with north winds sustaining speeds of 10 to 15 mph-and occasionally 15 to 20 mph-accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph. High temperatures in Memphis are expected to reach the lower 70s before dropping significantly into the upper 40s by Friday night under mostly clear skies.
Saturday, Oct. 17, brings full sunshine but notably cooler daytime conditions. Afternoon highs will reach the mid-60s, providing a stark 20-to-24-degree contrast from the near-90-degree heat experienced earlier in the week. Saturday night is forecasted to be clear and chilly, with overnight lows dipping into the lower 40s across the metropolitan area.
Warming Trend Returns Early Next Week
The crisp fall air will be relatively short-lived as high pressure shifts and milder air begins to move back into the region. Sunday, Oct. 18, will stay sunny with afternoon highs recovering into the lower 70s, while overnight lows settle back into the upper 40s.
The warming trend accelerates into the new workweek. Monday, Oct. 19, brings mostly sunny skies and mid-70s temperatures, followed by highs climbing closer to the upper 70s by Tuesday. Local meteorologists advise residents to enjoy the autumn chill while it lasts before warmer-than-average conditions return.
