An equipment issue at the Pearl Street substation disrupted electricity across Pierce County, Washington, on Friday, October 16, 2026. The failure left tens of thousands of customers without power on both sides of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
The outage impacted residents and businesses across Tacoma, University Place, Ruston, Gig Harbor, and the Key Peninsula. Repair crews and system operators immediately responded to the grid failure, working to isolate the faulty equipment and restore service.
Widespread Impact Across Peninsula Light and Tacoma Public Utilities
Utility providers reported heavy customer impacts during the peak of the grid disruption:
- Peninsula Light Company: Reported approximately 36,067 customers without power across Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula by 12:19 p.m., according to updates provided to The News Tribune.
- Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU): Initially reported roughly 25,000 affected customers before successfully reducing that estimate to 12,593 customers by 12:05 p.m. as switching operations routed power through alternate lines.
The simultaneous outages created widespread disruptions for local schools, traffic signals, and businesses throughout the affected service territories. Peninsula Light’s live outage map showed extensive coverage gaps across the entire peninsula region, while TPU managed localized outages extending through Ruston and University Place.
Investigation and Restoration Efforts
Engineers and field technicians from both utilities coordinated to diagnose the root cause of the Pearl Street substation malfunction. Substation issues of this scale typically involve high-voltage transformers, circuit breakers, or relay protection systems. These components require manual inspection and safety verification before workers can safely re-energize the grid.
“Crews are actively working to investigate the equipment issue and safely restore power to all impacted customers as quickly as possible,” utility representatives noted during the emergency response.
As crews completed necessary repairs and cleared equipment faults, power was progressively restored to neighborhoods throughout the afternoon. Residents in the affected regions were advised to check official utility outage maps for real-time updates and restoration estimates specific to their neighborhoods.
