A tragic incident unfolded Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck drove into spectators and participants during a youth soccer game at the Scheels Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. The crash resulted in the deaths of a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson, and left 10 other individuals with traumatic injuries.
According to the Wichita Police Department, the incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. Witnesses reported that a black pickup truck drove through the youth soccer fields, striking multiple people before finally coming to a stop 100 to 200 yards down the field.

Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses confirmed during a press conference that the two victims who lost their lives were not related to each other. In addition to the fatalities, 11 people were transported to local hospitals following the mass casualty event.

An eleventh person, a 61-year-old woman, was transported to the hospital for treatment of a non-traumatic medical condition.
Investigation and Suspect Information
Police took the driver of the pickup truck into custody immediately following the crash. Authorities identified her as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, who reportedly had a valid driver’s license.
Capt. Moses stated that two juvenile girls were inside the vehicle with the driver at the time of the crash. Investigators learned that the suspect had a child playing soccer at the complex, though not on the specific field where the tragedy occurred. Police have confirmed that the driver is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, though it remains unclear whether the incident was intentional.
Authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing safety risk to the public and are actively seeking any video footage related to the event.
Impact on Athletic Events and Community Response
The crash caused widespread disruption at the sports complex, which was hosting multiple athletic events simultaneously. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) inaugural flag football semifinals were taking place on an adjacent field, featuring teams from five Kansas City-area schools: St. Thomas Aquinas, Shawnee Mission West, Shawnee Mission South, St. James Academy, and Baldwin.
Following the emergency response, KSHSAA officials immediately suspended the games in progress, including the third-place game and the state championship match. Spectators, student-athletes, and coaches were safely directed off the property by the Kansas Highway Patrol and Wichita Police Department officers.
The City of Wichita announced that all events at the Stryker Sports Complex have been canceled until further notice.
“Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita,” Mayor Lily Wu said during the press conference. “Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon watching their children play soccer. No one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold.”
School districts with teams present, such as the Shawnee Mission School District, confirmed that all of their students, staff, and families were accounted for and expressed their condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy.
