Actor Bill Nighy is officially set to join the cast for the second and final season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Scheduled to premiere on Paramount+ in March 2027, the upcoming sophomore season brings a mix of high-stakes academic trials and deeply personal family dynamics to the 32nd-century sci-fi series.
The casting announcement was revealed during the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Commission Con. Nighy, an Academy Award nominee recognized for his work in Living and Love Actually, will portray Nyk Ake. In the series lore, Nyk is the estranged father of Academy Chancellor and U.S.S. Athena Captain Nahla Ake, played by Academy Award winner Holly Hunter.
Character Connections and Season 2 Details
Because Nahla is half-human and half-Lanthanite-a species known for living thousands of years-her father’s presence introduces unique narrative friction. Showrunners and producers noted that Nyk’s arrival on the U.S.S. Athena will disrupt institutional decorum and force Chancellor Ake to confront lingering familial tensions.
Alongside Nighy, actress Rosemarie DeWitt is joining the guest cast as Laytha Sadal, the mother of Betazoid student Tarima (played by Zoë Steiner) and the First Lady of Betazed. These parental additions mark a shift for the series, moving beyond classroom training and cadet rivalries to explore generational rifts and political diplomacy.
Production Background and Streaming Context
The second season follows the main cast of cadets into their sophomore year aboard the U.S.S. Athena. Official loglines indicate that their leadership, romance, and morality will be tested through competitive schoolwide tournaments, delicate diplomatic talks, and the arrival of a mysterious new cadet named Keats, played by series regular Ruaridh Aldington.
While the first season divided critical and audience responses, earning an 88 percent “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 43 percent user score, Paramount+ confirmed that the second season will serve as the show’s final chapter. Meanwhile, Nighy’s diverse career continues to resonate with global streaming audiences, with his period-film performance in the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma actively available on BBC iPlayer.
