Brazilian broadcaster Globo has drawn immediate backlash following the announcement of its upcoming reality competition, Academia dos Nepo Babies. The series, produced by Estúdios Globo and scheduled to stream on Globoplay in 2027, brings together the children of celebrities and influential figures to compete in professional assignments and activities outside their regular routines.
The controversy ignited during Globo’s upfront event for advertisers and journalists in São Paulo on October 14. Television presenter Ticiane Pinheiro introduced the format alongside her mother, Helô Pinheiro, and her daughter, Rafaella Justus. During the presentation, a live demonstration involving a routine household chore triggered widespread negative reactions online.
The Launch Event Demonstration and Online Reaction
To showcase the program’s premise, Rafaella Justus participated in a brief onstage challenge involving a stack of dishes. Struggling with the timed task, she exclaimed, “I chipped my nail. Mom, I’m going to break everything!” while her grandmother Helô attempted to intervene.
The moment quickly circulated on social media, prompting sharp criticism from viewers who viewed the presentation as tone-deaf. Commentators on various platforms pointed out the stark contrast between portraying basic household chores as arduous challenges and the daily routines of ordinary citizens.
“You wake up at six in the morning to go to work, take advantage of your break to distract yourself for a few minutes, open Twitter and see that they’ve created a nepo baby reality show where the challenges are doing the dishes,” one social media user wrote. Others questioned the creative direction of the network, criticizing the decision to spotlight the privileges of wealthy families.
Program Format and Ticiane Pinheiro’s Defense
According to the announced format, Academia dos Nepo Babies will not rely on traditional weekly eliminations. Instead, a panel of experts will assess participants’ performances across various professional assignments and award points throughout the season. The contestant with the highest cumulative score at the conclusion of the series will win.
Following the public backlash, host Ticiane Pinheiro addressed the criticism on social media. She explained that the onstage dishwashing segment was intended as a lighthearted joke to highlight extreme contrasts. Replying to a commenter, Pinheiro wrote, “It was a joke. The most sinister challenge will be fixing the cable of the Sugarloaf Mountain cable car. We did the dishwashing scene precisely to show the contrast, but I guess some people didn’t get the joke.”
Broader Industry Discussion
The early controversy spilled over into traditional television talk shows, including Band’s Melhor da Tarde. Panelists debated the public appeal of watching wealthy individuals perform everyday labor. While discussions highlighted deep societal divisions regarding wealth and privilege, network representatives confirmed that the production remains on track for its 2027 streaming debut on Globoplay.
