NBC is officially returning to the traditional multi-camera sitcom format with its new comedy series Newlyweds. Starring real-life married actors Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, the show focuses on an older couple who marry shortly after meeting. The network announced that the series will premiere on Friday, October 23, at 8:30 p.m. ET, with new episodes arriving on Peac**k the following day.

According to NBC’s schedule details, the first season consists of 13 episodes airing on Friday nights directly following Happy’s Place. Production and live tapings have been underway in Universal City, California.

Premise and Creative Team

Created by television writer Gail Lerner, the series features an official logline describing it as a later-in-life love story about a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship.

The narrative follows Jeanie (Leoni) and James (Daly) as they attempt to blend their established lives and family responsibilities. Behind the scenes, veteran television writer and producer Bruce Helford stepped in as showrunner and executive producer. He works alongside executive producers Eric and Kim Tannenbaum for The Tannenbaum Company, Jamie Lee Curtis, Scott Schwartz, and Lionsgate Television. Director Pam Fryman executive produced the pilot episode. The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Cast and Characters

The series features a robust ensemble cast supporting the central couple:

  • Téa Leoni as Jeanie, a free-spirited woman
  • Tim Daly as James, a recently divorced philosophy professor
  • Emma Meisel as Poppy, Jeanie’s daughter
  • Ignacio Diaz-Silverio as Lolo, Jeanie’s adopted son
  • Bill O’Neill as Arvid, James’ assistant in the philosophy department at the University of Oslo
  • Jamie Lee Curtis as Claudia, James’ glamorous ex-wife and a recurring guest star
  • Al Madrigal as Dan, James’ divorced best friend

Art Imitating Life for the Leads

The on-screen marriage carries a direct parallel to the lives of its principal actors. Téa Leoni and Tim Daly first met in 2014 on the set of the hit political drama Madam Secretary, where they also played characters involved in a relationship. The two married in a small, family-only ceremony in July 2025.

Reflecting on the project during NBCUniversal’s Backlot Pass event, Leoni noted that they wanted to work together again. She explained that the world had grown darker, and they wanted to do something lighter. They loved their previous experience in television and wanted to spend their days together.

Daly echoed those sentiments about returning to a television format with his wife. He remarked that they spent six years pretending to be married on television. Now, they get to do it while actually married. He called it a miracle, noting that it is really fun, cool, and that they still like each other.

Where and When to Watch

Newlyweds premieres Friday, October 23, at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC, airing immediately after Happy’s Place Season 3. Viewers looking to stream the show can catch new episodes on Peac**k starting the day after their broadcast.
