A pickup truck struck children and adults during a youth soccer game at the city-owned Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing two people and injuring 10 others, police said.

The fatal crash occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 17. Investigators have been working to examine what caused the dark Chevrolet pickup to enter the active playing field while a game was underway, striking individuals in its path.

Victims Identified by Police

The Wichita Police Department identified the two individuals killed in the tragic incident as 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Both victims were from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related to each other. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ten other victims, ranging in age from 5 to 68, were hospitalized following the crash. According to Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses, their injuries ranged from bruises to severe trauma, though none were considered life-threatening. An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries caused by the vehicle, bringing the total number of hospital transports to 11.

Driver Status and Investigation Details

Police identified the driver of the Chevrolet pickup as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. Authorities confirmed that two juveniles were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, and another of her children was playing soccer at the complex on a different field.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with first responders and law enforcement. Following initial questioning and interviews with more than 30 witnesses-including the two children inside the truck-authorities released her from custody pending the results of toxicology testing and a complete mechanical examination of the vehicle. As of Sunday afternoon, no criminal charges had been filed.

Community Response and Officials’ Statements

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan praised the swift actions of bystanders, off-duty firefighters, and medical personnel who rushed onto the field to render life-saving aid before emergency crews arrived.

"What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy," Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said in a public statement. "We know what happened, but now we're working very hard to find out why it happened, and we're not there yet."

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu offered her condolences to the community, stating, "Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita. Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon watching their children play soccer. No one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold."

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly also released a statement confirming she was closely monitoring the situation and remaining in contact with local leadership. All scheduled events at the Stryker Sports Complex were suspended until further notice as police and city officials continue their active investigation.
