Filipina tennis duo Alex Eala and Shaira Rivera ended their Asian Games women’s doubles campaign in Nagoya, Japan, following a second-round loss to the seeded Chinese pair Jiang Xinyu and Yang Zhaoxuan on Wednesday.

Eala and Rivera bowed out in straight sets, 5-7, 2-6, at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center after an hour and 34 minutes of play. The defeat came just hours before Eala successfully advanced to the women’s singles semifinals.

Match Flow and Turning Points

The Filipina tandem showed resilience in the opening set, fighting back from a 2-5 deficit to level the score at 5-all. However, Jiang and Yang rallied to win back-to-back games and secure the first set 7-5.

In the second set, the Chinese pair established an early 5-1 advantage. During the set, Yang requested a medical timeout for a lower back injury after the fourth game. Despite the stoppage, Eala and Rivera were unable to capitalize on the break. Rivera ultimately committed an unforced error into the net, sealing the victory and the match for the Chinese team.

Statistical advantages favored Jiang and Yang, who won 79 total points compared to 60 for the Philippines. The Chinese duo converted seven of 11 break-point opportunities, while Eala and Rivera successfully converted three of four.

Tournament Path and Future Outlook

Prior to their second-round elimination, Eala and Rivera opened their tournament campaign with a convincing victory over Hong Kong’s Ching Laam Lai and Kallista Liu. After dropping the opening game, the Filipina pair claimed six consecutive games to take the first set 6-1, before closing out the match with a 6-3 win in the second set.

Reflecting on their partnership, Rivera expressed gratitude to her partner in a post-match interview with One Sports. “I just want to thank Alex for giving me this opportunity to play with her. I’m so grateful for everything, and I love her so much,” Rivera said.

Eala shared an optimistic view of the partnership and the broader future of tennis in the Philippines, keeping future international competitions in mind. “Leaving the court with no regrets. Super looking forward to it. I think the future of Filipino tennis is bright, with our two girls and the ones to come afterwards,” Eala noted.

Shifting Focus to Singles

With the women’s doubles run concluded, Eala turns her full attention to the singles tournament. Earlier on Wednesday, she secured her spot in the semifinals by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland, 7-5, 6-0.

Eala is scheduled to face China’s Wang Xiyu in the semifinals on Thursday, October 1. The winner will advance to play either Yulia Putintseva or Zhang Shuai in the final for the gold medal.
